Networking Tips for Career Success!
Welcome back to another episode of Redefining Motherhood! I'm so excited to share insights I gained from a recent talk I gave on networking and relationship-building to a women's leadership group in my industry. As many of you know, I've had quite a successful career going from entry-level to C-suite in just 12 years. What you may not know is that every single job opportunity came to me through my network of personal relationships.
The Hidden Job Market
One of the most eye-opening statistics I've encountered is that 70-80% of job openings are never advertised. These positions are often filled through personal referrals and networking. This hidden job market can seem daunting, but it also presents a unique opportunity for those who understand how to navigate it effectively.
Networking has allowed me to tap into this hidden market, gaining access to opportunities that I wouldn't have found otherwise. The statistics also show that personal connections often lead to higher starting salaries and more fulfilling job roles. By focusing on building genuine relationships, I've been able to connect with people who can offer valuable insights and open doors to new possibilities.
Building these connections isn't about immediate gains but about fostering long-term relationships. By prioritizing networking, I’ve been able to cultivate a supportive professional network that continues to benefit my career.
Approaching Networking with Authenticity
Authenticity is key when it comes to networking. People can sense when you're being genuine versus when you're only interested in what they can do for you. Early in my career, I realized that showing sincere interest in others and valuing their input was crucial.
When I approach networking, I aim to be a sponge, absorbing information and learning from others. Asking thoughtful questions and active listening has helped me build stronger, more meaningful connections. It’s not always about adding value immediately but about being present and engaged in conversations.
This authentic approach has not only helped me build trust but also made networking a more enjoyable and rewarding experience. It's about creating relationships that are mutually beneficial and grounded in genuine interest and respect.
The Art of Following Up
Follow-up is an essential, yet often overlooked, component of effective networking. A simple thank you note or a message to check in can make a significant difference in maintaining and strengthening professional relationships.
I make it a habit to set calendar reminders to follow up with my contacts every few months. This consistent effort shows that I value the relationship and am committed to maintaining it. Whether it’s after a meeting or a casual conversation, a follow-up note can reinforce the connection and keep the lines of communication open.
Following up has helped me stay on people's radar and has often led to new opportunities and collaborations. It’s a small effort with a big payoff in the realm of networking!
Building Long-Term Relationships
Networking isn’t just a one-time effort but a continuous process of building and nurturing relationships. Consistency and persistence are key to long-term success in networking. By focusing on adding value and being genuine, I’ve been able to create a network that supports my career growth over time.
Instead of focusing on what I can get from others, I concentrate on building authentic connections. This shift in mindset has helped me develop relationships that are both professionally and personally fulfilling.
The long-term benefits of this approach are clear. Relationships I've cultivated over the years have led to collaborations, mentorship opportunities, and career advancements that I couldn’t have achieved on my own.
